Animation & Videography

Design, when incorporated with motion, can bring an entirely new meaning to a piece. In this section, I wanted to highlight both animation and videography while also showcasing the storyboards behind the work whenever possible. These storyboards emphasize the amount of thought and planning that goes into each project long before a camera is picked up or a computer is ever touched.

From an initial pencil sketch on paper to the final export in Adobe After Effects or Adobe Premiere Pro, every piece evolves through a process filled with creativity, intention, and refinement; transforming static ideas into motion-driven experiences.

Suits Title Sequence & Kinetic Type Exploration

This project began as an exploration of reimagining an existing television title sequence. I chose the opening sequence from the TV series Suits because I thought creating an animated reinterpretation of it would be a fun and challenging exercise. What started as a title sequence redesign quickly evolved into an exploration of kinetic typography, largely inspired by the show’s theme song, Greenback Boogie by Ima Robot.

I do not own the rights to the audio used in the original sequence, so it has been excluded from these videos. However, I still wanted to highlight the planning, experimentation, and visual execution that went into each piece.

Video Essay

I wanted to explore working with different camera angles and audio transitions. I took my favorite sport and explored it from how I think about it from a point of view of a former competitive player. This was shot using a DLSR camera, as well as, an IPhone camera. I wanted to have at least two different angles of every scene to pick and choose what I thought would be best. This was all editied in Adobe After Effects, and Premiere Pro.

(Below) Shows my storyboard, I wanted to plan out as much as I could because the people I was working with had their own busy schedules. I wanted to ensure that we'd only need two filiming days, and by planning it out the four of us were able to make it work!

Rotoscope

I wanted to combine drawing, movement, and football/soccer into one video. Each frame is hand drawn (using a Wacom tablet). I started by filming a video of me juggling a ball, and with Adobe Photoshop I turned each frame into a photo. Once I had the frames set up as photos I drew over myself, and the ball. When the drawings were complete I exported all frames put together as a .gif. I used Adobe After Effects to than clean up the file and add audio for the final export.

The background music is "House of the Rising Sun", the particular instrumental was The Animals cover of it. I do not own the rights but the audio is in the public domain.

Mini Documentary Interview

This video was done with a group. I being the only Senior in my group was interviewed by 3 freshman on my experience with studying graphic design. It was a great way to think critically while still having fun with the interview. I handled most of the editing, while my peers were incharge of recording, and directing the video. The majority of the editing was done in Adobe Premiere Pro, some of the captions were added in After Effects.

This was filmed in various places around the University of Minnesota Duluth Campus.
